Jamie Foxx Says His Daughter’s Guitar Saved His Life

After his stroke, Foxx credits his daughter Anelise for helping him heal with her music.

Talent clearly runs in Jamie Foxx’s family.

In his Netflix comedy special, Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was, the Oscar-winning actor shared how his youngest daughter, Anelise, helped him recover from a life-threatening stroke in April 2023. At just 14 years old, Anelise snuck into her father’s hospital room with a guitar and played by his bedside.

“She said, ‘I know what my daddy needs … that’s my daddy,’” Foxx revealed. Her music had an immediate effect, calming his dangerously high vitals.

“When she played, my vitals went down,” Foxx said. “The nurses were baffled. I found out God was in that guitar. That’s my spiritual defibrillator.”

Foxx hinted at his daughter’s miraculous guitar skills in an Instagram post from June, saying it helped him “through a lot.”

Anelise was then invited onstage by her father and briefly played before Foxx’s outpouring continued. "Anelise, thank you so much for stepping up when all was lost,” Foxx said.

“You had to make it because I always dreamed that we’d perform together onstage one day,” Anelise responded before the father-daughter duo performed a joint song with references to Foxx’s eldest daughter, Corrine, 30.
