‘Emancipation’ Trailer: Will Smith Slavery Drama Is As Intense As It Sounds
The official trailer for Emancipation has been released by Apple. The film is based on the true story of an enslaved person named Peter, portrayed by Will Smith, who escapes a Louisiana plantation in the 1860s and makes his way to the north to join the Union army. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the historical drama marks Smith’s first film to release since the actor slapped Chris Rock at the Academy Awards in March.
Smith said at a screening of the film back in October, "Throughout my career, I've turned down many films that were set in slavery. I never wanted to show us like that. And then this picture came along.”
He continued, “And this is not a film about slavery. This is a film about freedom. This is a film about resilience. This is a film about faith. This is a film about the heart of a man — what could be called the first viral image. Cameras had just been created, and the image of whipped Peter went around the world."
Emancipation will be released on Dec. 9, 2022.
