“Empty Chair” Lynchings Aim at Obama

In a scary nod to both America’s ugly racist history of lynching and Clint Eastwood’s strange “empty chair” speech, chairs were strung up in trees in Texas and Virginia to display distaste for President Obama.

In a scary nod to both America’s ugly racist history of lynching and Clint Eastwood’s strange “empty chair” speech, chairs were strung up in trees in Texas and Virginia to display distaste for President Obama.

Virginia’s “chair lynching” featured a “NObama” sign and was found in a public park in Centreville. In Texas, an Austin homeowner hung an empty folding chair with an American flag from a tree in his front yard. When asked about the display, he reportedly told a blogger, “You can take it and go straight to hell and take Obama with you.”

The chair references Clint Eastwood’s irreverent speech at this year’s Republican National Convention where he lodged criticisms of the president at an empty chair as if Barack Obama were sitting in the empty seat.

According to NBC News, the Secret Service is looking into the incidents.

"The Secret Service is aware of this and will conduct appropriate follow up," spokesman Brian Leary told NBC News.
