Mixtape Review: Mac Miller as Larry Fisherman, S.H.O.W.Time

Larry Fisherman, b.k.a. Blue Slide Park emcee Mac Miller, along with a host of other cunning lyricists dropped S.H.O.WTIME (Super High Off Wax Time) this past Saturday (April 20), just two days before the Pittsburgh native's release of "SDS" (Somebody Do Something), the Flying Lotus-produced first tease from Miller's upcoming sophomore album, due later this year.
And for those who like a slow roast, S.H.O.W.TIME definitely tides the Miller fan over. Unexpected highlights include the series of interludes — instrumentals reminiscent of the late, great J. Dilla, "Shatter," the sonically soothing "Errl" and, arguably the tape's hottest beat, "OG Wax."
Vocally — aside from Miller's sing-song rap style — S.H.O.W.TIME also highbeams just how much of an influence Kendrick Lamar has had on recent hip hop with songs like standout "Money Team," which features Black Hippy's own Ab-Soul and rookie phenom Smoke Dza; and "Outie," which is done by a particularly K. Dot-sounding Choo Jackson.
Other high notes are the aptly titled "MellowHigh," which features Hodgy Beats and Domo Genesis; the gritty NY rainy day-sounding "Boat Races" with Freddie Gibbs and Boldy James; and the lyrical-dope driven "Royalty" with fellow Pittsburgh rappers Palermo Stone and Franchise.
Songs like "Peace," "Green Room" and "End of the World Party," which sounded like a warm-up session that took place in a frat house, however, blow the vibe, making the collection sound more like it will appeal to fans of cannabis rahter than fans of Canibus (its biggest drawbacks are its limited subject matter and its inconsistency). Still, overall, S.H.O.W.TIME offers solid production and a healthy amount of lyrical proficiency — just the right amount of buzz to keep fans hooked for his album.
