Idris Elba to Release Album Inspired by Nelson Mandela Role
Idris Elba is taking his talents from the silver screen to the recording studio. The No Good Deed actor has announced plans for a November release of his first album titled mi Mandela, inspired by his experience playing Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Elba's voice will not be the only standout on the LP. The actor enlisted South African musical talent as well as artists Mumford & Sons, James Blake, Maverick Sabre and Mr. Hudson.
"South Africa has numerous different tribes, and each one has a musical expression, and each one has a very unique, different sound style," he said in a video announcing the album. "I had my studio at the apartment I was staying in while I was making Mandela — a little keyboard, a laptop — and as an experiment to myself, I vowed to keep making music."
Though this transition may come as a surprise to many, this is actually not the first time the Luther actor has delved into music. He has released music under the alias Dris, and also directed and appeared in the video for Mumford & Sons' "Lover of the Light." More recently, Elba directed K. Michelle's production Rebellious Soul: The Musical.
mi Mandela is set for a Nov. 24 release in Johannesburg, Mali and London.
