Denzel Washington’s Harlem Baptism Marks His Journey to Becoming a Minister
Denzel Washington added a profound new chapter to his life over the weekend, officially stepping into the role of Minister. On Saturday (Dec. 21), the Academy Award winner was baptized at the Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ in Harlem, New York.
The heartwarming moment was live-streamed on Facebook, courtesy of the First Jurisdiction Church of God in Christ Eastern New York.
Washington was also awarded a minister's license, allowing him to be ordained.
The “Gladiator II” star reflected on the milestone during the service, telling the congregation, “In one week, I turn 70. It took a while, but I'm here.”

The actor later shared a story from his youth, recalling a prophetic encounter in his mom's beauty parlor with a woman named Ruth Green. “She said, ‘Boy, you are going to travel the world and preach to millions of people,’” he recounted. “Fifty years later, look at God. If He can do this for me, there’s nothing He can’t do for you. The sky literally is the limit and there’s no limit to the sky.”
Washington also expressed heartfelt gratitude to his "loving, faithful wife," Pauletta Washington, who was present for the joyous moment.
Washington previously discussed his faith in an essay published last November. In it, he told Esquire he was “unafraid” of the public's reaction to his faith and added, “I don’t care what anyone thinks.”
