White Beauty Blogger Claiming ‘Chocolate Challenge’ Sparks a Twitter Uproar
Blackface has always been extremely insulting to people of color, but the fact that it's 2017 and this is still going on is crazy. Most recently, YouTube beauty blogger Vika Shapel posted a pic and video on Instragram displaying half of her face painted in "chocolate" in promotion for a new YouTube video challenge that she named "the chocolate challenge."
The Caucasian vlogger displayed her excitement with the following caption, "Something fun is coming to YouTube, idk if there is a challenge like this but we haven't seen it so Im calling it the chocolate challenge!"
The Instagram post has been deleted and Shapel ended up deactivating her account. Screen shots are forever though.
After all of the warranted negative backlash on social media, Shapel released an apology according to Yahoo News. "I wasn't aware of the whole blackface concept before people began commenting it on the photo. I would like to apologize to people that were hurt or offended by my post, and it won't happen again," she said.
Our girl Yara Shahidi tweeted this last year, but it still rings true...
