Chance the Rapper Just Donated $1 Million to Chicago Public Schools

He held a press conference to discuss the action he's taking.

Chance the Rapper could be justified in celebrating his impressive Grammys run any number of ways. Instead of taking a rare day off, the Chicago native has decided to continue his advocacy in his hometown, keeping the youth at the center of his focus.

Despite meeting with Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner this past Friday (March 3), the rapper admitted that he was not necessarily pleased with how their conversation went, sharing that the answers he received skewed too vague. With the weekend allowing him time to brainstorm how to effectively inspire positive change, the rapper continued to take things into his own hands today (Mar. 6), holding a press conference to discuss exactly what he has in mind to help build up communities in Chicago.

"While I am disappointed in Gov. Rauner, that will not stop me from doing all I can to support Chicago's most valuable resource: it's children," Chance shared during the live-streamed press conference.

During the conference, which had over 18,000 people tuning in live, the rapper announced he will be donating one million dollars to Chicago's public school system. Speaking specifically, he shared that of that donation, $10,000 will be going to various public schools a piece to help fund afterschool programs.

Chance also shared that he will be teaming up with Common in order to continue this mission and discuss further funding.

"Our kids should not be held hostage because of political positions," he exclaimed during the press conference.

Chance the Rapper has also updated his personal website to include information on how others can get involved in benefiting CPS and will be continuing the conversation further as this year unfolds.
