Janelle Monáe Joins Naomie Harris in Moonlight
Janelle Monáe will being her sparkle to the big screen in Moonlight, marking the singer's first-ever film role.
Variety reports that Monáe will join Naomie Harris (Southapaw, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Skyfall), Andre Holland (Selma, 42 and Bride Wars) and Mahershala Ali (House of Cards) for the coming-of-age drama directed by Barry Jenkins.
The film, produced by Brad Pitt's company Plan B, is based on the play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue by Tarell McCraney and centers around Chiron, a young man growing up during a “War on Drugs”-era Miami. It’s structured in three different time periods as Chiron battles a deteriorating home life and deals with his dawning sexuality.
The crew began filming this month (see a snapshot from Ali's Instagram below) and while there's still no word on the exact role the "Yoga" crooner plays, we have no doubt she's slaying as an actress.
