Dartmouth College Introducing #BlackLivesMatter Course This Spring

Dartmouth College is introducing the #BlackLivesMatter course on its campus this spring semester that will discuss present-day race, structural inequality and violence issues, and examine the issues in a historical context.

#BlackLivesMatter is what many bill as the name of the current movement toward equal rights. The hashtag, which drove information about protests happening in cities around the world, was started by Opal Tometi, Patrisse Cullors and Alicia Garza in 2012, in response to the killing of Trayvon Martin.

Now the movement has found its way into academic spaces. Dartmouth College is introducing the #BlackLivesMatter course on its campus this spring semester that will take a look at present-day race, structural inequality and violence issues, and examine the topics in a historical context.

“10 Weeks, 10 Professors: #BlackLivesMatter” will feature lectures from about 15 professors at Dartmouth College across disciplines, including anthropology, history, women's and gender studies, English and others.

“We hope students will be able to understand that Ferguson is not just an event in 2014, but something that’s tethered in time to a long history and still-emerging ideas about race in the U.S. and how policing works in an age of social media and distributed surveillance,” English professor Aimee Bahng said in a statement.

The idea for the class was created during an Advancement of Learning workshop at the college, which challenged instructors to think of ways to incorporate the events surrounding Michael Brown's death into their student's course work.
