People Go off on Trump for Threatening UC Berkeley's Federal Funding After Protests Cancel Alt-Right Speaker
On Wednesday night, massive demonstrations occurred at University of California, Berkeley in response to Breitbart writer and alt-right speaker Milo Yiannopoulos. Eventually, the peaceful protests became aggressive when protesters started fires, broke windows of campus buildings, and refused police orders.
Police attempted to contain protesters, who gathered outside the building where Yiannopoulos was scheduled to speak. However, students eventually broke through the metal barriers put in place by campus police.
Yiannopoulos is not only known for his alt-right views, but for recently getting banned from Twitter for cyber bullying SNL comedian Leslie Jones.
While protesters chanted and marched outside of the building where Yiannopoulos was held, the Breitbart writer spoke on the phone with Fox News.
“Students who come to my talks don’t necessarily agree with me but want to see the other side,” Yiannopoulos said. “They were prevented from doing so this evening from violence from the left. The left that is terrified from anyone who might be persuasive or interesting or might take people with them.”
As the nation watched the students protest on the California campus, President Donald Trump impulsively tweeted that he would stop federal funds to the school
Many condemned the president for attempting to punish the school for the students acting on their right to free speech
As a result of the protests, the speech scheduled to be given by Yiannopoulos was canceled

Although the media has continued to categorize the incident as a protests, many right-wing supporters have called it a riot
The violent actions taken by some protesters at UC Berkeley mirrors the actions taken by some Black Lives Matter activists; however, the former was described as a demonstration while the latter is mostly described as a riot.
We can't help but wonder if the action had taken place on an HBCU campus, how would the media categorize it. Protest or riot?
