Kid Daytona Premieres New Video on 106 & Park
BET Music Matters artist Kid Daytona mixes the throwback sound of 1990’s New York rap with his own modern flare to create a truly unique brand of hip hop. In his newest video, “Fly Lullaby,” the laid-back MC channels Camp Lo over an eclectic 9th Wonder production reminiscent of A Tribe Called Quest. The Bronx-bred rhyme slinger stopped by 106 & Park today (October 18) to premiere the picturesque video which was shot on the tropical beaches of Puerto Rico.
After just recently rapping up the LR-Generation tour alongside Freddie Gibbs and 9th Wonder, facing the hyperactive 106 audience feels like par for the course to Daytona.
“When people rhyme along to my music, it’s an ill experience to have something that you wrote and people feel passionate enough to recite it,” Daytona tells BET.com. “People from Chicago, Indianapolis and St. Louis knowin’ who I am and knowin’ my records.”
As for being on 106 for the second time in his career, “I just felt blessed to be there and it was definitely a dope experience overall,” he adds nonchalantly.
With his 2010 LRG-backed project The Interlude still attracting new listeners, the Bronx-bred MC is currently looking to continue building his buzz. The fashion-forward spitta plans to release the second installment of The Interlude at the top of 2012. Just like the critically acclaimed first edition producer 9th Wonder will contribute some beats to The Interlude II. Look for Boston beatsmith Statik Selektah to produce a number of songs, while rap vet Raekwon, R&B hitmaker Ryan Leslie and fellow Music Matters artist Melanie Fiona will make guest spots on the effort.
While his music has taken him across the country, Daytona is still firmly grounded in today’s New York rap scene. The competition between him and fellow upcoming MCs from NYC drives him to improve.
“As far as New York, it’s always competitive. We take it just like basketball or any other sport,” says Daytona. But does that competitive spirit create animosity? Not according to him. “It’s always love every time we see each other. We do records together. I feel the bond is definitely stronger amongst us young cats than it was when we was watchin’ it as kids. Everybody would say New York wasn’t unified because everybody had they egos, but right now it’s like we all tryin’ to come up and all tryin’ to make it.”
