UPDATE: 8:50 p.m. EDT The Boston Police Department is reporting that the Boston Marathon bombing suspect, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, is in custody. The suspect is alive with unspecified medical needs.
He was reportedly hiding a boat in the Watertown, Massachusetts, neighborhood, according to the Associated Press. His accomplice brother was killed by police early Friday morning.
Gunshots were heard in the neighborhood, shortly before 7 p.m. on Friday evening, less than an hour after Gov. Deval Patrick lifted the lockdown notice on the city.
Police identified the suspects as brothers, of Chechen heritage. The man killed by police was identified as Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, and was born in Russia. Authorities say the suspect at large is 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, born in Kyrgyzstan.
The first suspect was killed with a bomb strapped to his chest after he and his accomplice brother went on a crime spree; robbing a 7-Eleven, shooting a police officer to death, carjacking an SUV and throwing explosives at law enforcement, inciting a firefight.
Earlier Friday, a 20-block radius of Watertown, a Boston suburb, was sealed and residents wereinstructed not to leave their homes. The remaining suspect is believed to be holed up in the area and is “considered armed and extremely dangerous,” said Colonel Timothy Alben, head of Massachusetts state police. Gov. Deval Patrick asked residents across the entire city and nearby communities to "shelter in place" while police conduct the manhunt.
The search has also forced the city to close its entire network of commuter rail, bus, and subway services. Officials also requested businesses across the area not to open.
"We believe this to be a terrorist," Boston Police Commissioner Ed David had said late last night before the suspects had been identified. "We believe this to be a man who's come here to kill people. We need to get him in custody."
Around 1 p.m. EDT, several news outlets reported that authorities were planning a controlled explosion at a Cambridge, Massachusetts, apartment connected with the suspects' family.
A White House official said President Obama held a briefing with his top homeland security officials, FBI, and Secretary of State John Kerry in the White House Situation Room Friday morning.
Slain suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev is said to have been a competitive boxer and reports say a YouTube account linked to his name includes a playlist devoted to "terrorism."
The brothers have been in the U.S. for about 10 years.
The Associated Press spoke with the Tsarnaevs' father, who is in Russia, by phone and he had this to say of his son: "My son is a true angel," the elder Tsarnaev said. "Dzhokhar is a second-year medical student in the U.S. He is such an intelligent boy. We expected him to come on holidays here."
No reports have confirmed the suspect's enrollment in medical school.
An uncle of the brothers also spoke with the media and shared his disbelief.
"I can't believe this, it's not possible. My nephews can't do this," Alvi Tsarni told local CBS affiliate WBZ Boston. "I don't believe any of my nephews [are] involved in this horrible incident."
Another family member emerged late Friday morning, speaking to reporters convened outside his home in Montgomery Village, Maryland.
Identified as the suspects' uncle Ruslan Tsarni told reporters that Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev had “put a shame" not only their family but "the entire Chechen ethnicity."
