Chadwick Boseman Tributes: Diddy, Pharrell, Questlove And More Artists Remember ‘Black Panther’ Legend
The hip-hop community is still reeling from the shocking news following the sudden death of Chadwick Boseman. News of his passing, after a four year battle with colon cancer, was met with shock and grief.
In the wake of his tragic passing, tributes have been pouring in from many of Boseman's contemporaries, colleagues, and close friends as they took to social media to remember him one last time. A number of musical artists and rappers shared some of their favorite memories of Boseman.
“I’m so shocked and heartbroken about Chadwick,” John Legend tweeted out. “He was such a bright light, such a gifted performer. He brought grace, elegance and power to everything he did. He always seemed to carry our ancestors with him. And now he joins them far too soon.”
R&B star Toni Braxton recollected a time where Boseman told her that his favorite song of hers was “You Mean the World to Me.”
“Our makeup artists are friends and he used to get on the phone and ask me to sing ‘You Mean The World To Me’ because it was his favorite song of mine, and now this song will be forever dedicated to him,” she shared on the social platform. “Rest In Power King.”
Over on Instagram, Questlove remembered “the feeling in the air the week [Black Panther] premiered.”
“To watch people transform beaming with pride & purpose. I [saw] firsthand the effect of this movie & how a film of this caliber could change people. I couldn’t stop bugging him about it. Sad loss for his family, loved ones, friends & supporters everywhere,” The Roots’ frontman wrote. Let’s also see the teachable lesson that you never truly know what someone is going through in their life. Never take anyone for granted. Especially in these times. Thank you Chadwick Boseman.”
As previously reported, Chadwick Boseman’s official Instagram account confirmed that the Black Panther star passed away after a four year battle with colon cancer at the age of 43 on Friday evening (Aug. 28). He died at home surrounded by his wife and family according to the statement.
Boseman’s breakout moment came with his portrayal of baseball legend Jackie Robinson in 42. The South Carolina native and Howard alum went on to play other Black icons such as music pioneer James Brown in Get on Up and civil rights icon Thurgood Marshall in Marshall, as well as his groundbreaking role as the fictional Wakandan king T’Challa in Disney’s Black Panther, which grossed one billion dollars worldwide. Most recently, one of his last films, Da 5 Bloods, which was directed by Spike Lee, premiered on Netflix to rave reviews.
