Zoe Kravitz Was Too 'Urban' for Batman
Zoe Kravitz is one of the most exciting young actresses in Hollywood, with interesting roles and an A-list pedigree, but apparently that wasn't good enough for the producers of The Dark Knight Rises. The starlet tells NYLON magazine that she was denied a chance to audition for the blockbuster epic because she's Black.
“In the last Batman movie, they told me that I couldn’t get an audition for a small role they were casting because they weren’t ’going urban,'” she told the mag. “It was like, ’What does that have to do with anything?’ I have to play the role like, ’Yo, what’s up, Batman? What’s going on wit chu?'”
Though stories like that undoubtedly leave us feeling there is a lot of work to be done in Hollywood when it comes to diversity, Kravitz insists that not all producers are so short-sighted.
She added that her role in Jodie Foster’s The Brave One was “written for a white Russian girl,” but offered to her. “I don’t want to play everyone’s best friend. I don’t want to play the role of a girl struggling in the ghetto,” she said.
