Box Office: The Best Man Holiday Opens Strong With $30 Million
Fourteen years after the release of the original film, audiences are still in love with The Best Man. The sequel to the 1999 classic, The Best Man Holiday, debuted in second place at the box office this week, pulling in an admirable $30.6 million in ticket sales and bested only by Thor 2: The Dark World.
Best Man Holiday sees Morris Chestnut, Taye Diggs, Regina Hall, Terrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, Monica Calhoun and Melissa De Sousa reprising their roles as a group of friends whose secret hookups threaten to tear them apart. The first film, which opened to $9 million, was among the first Black rom-coms to garner mainstream attention. As expected, the film — like the original — played especially well with Black audiences.
Last Vegas dropped down to third place, followed by animated film Free Birds and Jackass: Bad Grandpa.
12 Years a Slave continued to go strong as it expands to more theaters around the country. The Oscar frontrunner has grossed $24.6 million to date, making it one of the most successful art house films of the year.
Next week, Hunger Games: Catching Fire goes up against Vince Vaughn's Delivery Man for the top spot over the busy Thanksgiving weekend.
