One Year Later: Tyler, The Creator Remembers Robin Williams

The Odd Future leader reminisces on a late comedy great.

It’s been a complete 365 days since Robin Williams died at age 63, yet it’s still difficult to believe the comedy great is gone.

The actor who brought the world films like Patch Adams and Mrs. Doubtfire took his own life by hanging on Aug. 11, 2014 after a longtime battle with addictions and depressions, in addition to a new diagnosis of Parkinson's.

Among the many who’ve mourned Williams, Tyler, The Creator considered him a favorite.

“It was pretty ass,” the Odd Future rapper remembers of first hearing the news. “Jumanji was like the first movie I owned. Mrs. Doubtfire, Dead Poets Societyhe was the really cool dude.

Tyler recalls the way Williams would embody his good-hearted roles.

“I don't know about his personal life but he always seemed like he was in a happy space and he never grew up to that mold that society wanted him to be,” the 24-year-old rapper told BET.com. “That’s why I like how Dead Poets Society pushed that free-thinking stuff and appreciated that people were different. Even if it was just a role, I just feel like that was actually his way of thinking.”

Robin Williams has left behind two upcoming films: his final on-screen performance in Boulevard, which is due for release on DVD Sept. 1 and voice work in the animated film Absolutely Anything, out on Friday (Aug. 14).

As for Tyler, he recently canned his Aussie tour, but is getting ready to embark on another with A$AP Rocky in September.
