Yet Another Star Athlete Accused of a Heinous Domestic Violence Attack
The Los Angeles Dodgers were supposed to acquire dominant closer Aroldis Chapman from the Cincinnati Reds on Monday, but the trade was put on hold.
That's because Major League Baseball is investigating Chapman concerning an October 30 alleged domestic violence incident, during which the pitcher allegedly fired eight gunshots in the garage of his Florida home and was accused of choking his girlfriend, according to a police report obtained by Yahoo Sports.
The incident stemmed from an argument the couple had over something Chapman's girlfriend found on his phone, leading to the Reds closer allegedly pushing her against a wall and choking her. However, when police arrived at the scene, they did not observe “injuries or even redness anywhere on her neck or chest,” according to the report. The lack of physical evidence of any injuries and inconsistencies in stories led to the police not arresting Chapman.
"I've reviewed the facts as portrayed," Chapman's lawyer, Jay Reisinger, told Yahoo on Monday night. "On behalf of Mr. Chapman, we vehemently deny the allegations as stated. Beyond that, we have no further comment at this time."
Under the rules of the MLB's new domestic violence policy, league commissioner Rob Manfred has the option to suspend or fine a violator at his discretion, although no such punishment has been announced as of press time.
While the MLB's investigation continues, the proposed trade, sending Chapman to the Dodgers in exchange for two minor leaguers, has been put on hold and it could take weeks to be official.
Chapman, 27, is regarded as the hardest-throwing pitcher in baseball history, reaching speeds of 105 miles per hour with his fastball.
