Zion Williamson Pledges To Cover The Salaries For Smoothie King Center Arena Workers

The NBA rookie is stepping up during the coronavirus outbreak but others are asking why aren't the NBA owners doing more?

You can be any age to assume a leadership position – and that’s been Zion Williamson’s mantra since entering the NBA.

The New Orleans Pelicans rookie phenom took to his Instagram account and announced that he will cover the salaries of all of the Smoothie King Arena’s workers’ salaries for the next 30 days during the NBA’s stoppage of play due to the coronavirus outbreak.

  • While it may feel like a good-hearted story, and bravo to the 19-year-old for stepping up big time, many are outraged that most NBA team owners, outside of the Dallas Mavericks’ Mark Cuban, aren’t doing anything to support their workers during the outbreak.

  • Kevin Love of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks have also announced their donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to similar causes to provide relief.

According to Live Science, around 2,175 people in the United States have been confirmed to have contracted the coronavirus while many other cases have yet gone undetected. Sadly, 47 people have reportedly died.

Globally there are nearly 128,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 4,718 deaths.
