John Legend On Hollywood Studios Boycotting Anti-Abortion States: 'Money Talks'

“The bottom line is we need to respect women.”

John Legend is the latest celebrity to voice his support for a Hollywood-led boycott against anti-abortion states.

In a sit-down interview with the Associated Press, the R&B singer said that he felt major film studios should use their financial pull to pressure states with restrictive abortion laws to do better in regards to women’s reproductive rights.

“I don’t know that it will definitely work, but I know that money talks,” the “All of Me” singer added.

  • Calling the bills “unconscionable,” John said that halting production in these states is a conversation “that needs to be had.”

Women's rights have come under attack as conservative politicians across the nation have been introducing a number of “heartbeat” bills that would ban nearly all abortions, some including cases of rape and incest. So far, none of the bans have gone into effect. Georgia’s legislation signed a bill into law on May 7, but it won’t go into effect until January 2020, according to CNBC.

  • After weeks of intense legislative debate sweeping the U.S. and celebrities calling for entertainment companies to pull production entirely from anti-abortion states, some major film studios confirmed with CNBC they will re-consider filming in Georgia.

“There’s no way we can have equality in any other realm if women don’t have the ability to make these kinds of decisions on their own without the state getting involved," John concluded. ”The bottom line is we need to respect women and let women make their own decisions.”
