This Weekend: Here’s What to Watch, Listen to & Experience
When it comes to content, it’s easy for us to stick to what we know or want that old thing back. But for a rare few, being a true content connoisseur is about being on top of what’s hot, what’s trending, and what’s next. Luckily, this new guide is everything for your music, literary, film, TV, and live experiences needs.
Each week, yours truly, Kevin L. Clark, will be your go-to advocate, spotlighting all those content cravings worth enjoying.
You’re now tuned into This Weekend, a weekly round-up for content culture lovers and those who love to avoid FOMO.
For Friday, Feb. 25, this week’s episode finds us with some freshly-discovered treasures for you, your family, and friends to get into + share with others. It contains a healthy dose of sonic vibes and, of course, something streaming that’s a feast for the eyes.
So bon appétit to all those true savants who are purveyors of content culture out there.
For Listeners Only:
If you’re still unfamiliar with Grammy Award-winning songwriter Starrah, thankfully you’re in luck with this weekend’s round-up.
Born Brittany Hazzard, her first track of 2022, “222,” is for lovers of numerology and angelic vocals. The track is symbolic as a palindrome (the last one for the next decade) and features a magnetic electric guitar that cushions Starrah’s melodies as she sings about a relationship that seems to be out of her hands.
Add in that Starrah’s proper debut album, The Longest Interlude, still deserves some proper playthrough — and you would be right to include this healing energy into your rotation tout suite.
The blockbuster hip hop duo known as EARTHGANG is closing out Black History Month in a major way. From sitting down with BET.com for an exclusive interview tied to their much-anticipated album, Ghetto Gods, to serving the people with health and wellness insights on Instagram — the ATL tandem’s new song, “Amen,” is right on time when it comes to expressing love in all its many forms.
Featuring Musiq Soulchild on the hook, “Amen” follows “American Horror Story” and “All Eyes on Me,” and arrives alongside their Biodeghettable tour, which will begin March 4 at Okeechobee Festival in Florida. This jawn is all prayer hands and fire emojis, making it one to share with those you have amoré for.
Tank and The Bangas return to This Weekend’s round-up with “Black Folk,” a celebration of Blackness in all its variations, which also features Alex Isley and Masego.
The cut follows “No ID,” which explored the concept of being protective of your space, and encapsulates the overarching vibe and theme of Red Balloon, which arrives May 13.
All the beautiful things about us and the things that make Black people think and love differently are referenced in this song that is repeat-worthy for those who celebrate Black History 365.
Watch The Streams:
The non-televised NAACP Image Awards ceremonies have been making headlines all week as Black excellence has reigned supreme.
Streamed every night through Friday, Feb. 25, at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT on YouTube and the NAACP Image Awards’ website, up next for everyone interested will be the live show, which will be hosted by Black-ish star Anthony Anderson.
With more surprises on the bill, plus a special performance by the incomparable Mary J. Blige, be sure to tune in to BET on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 8:00 p.m. to witness more Black History happening. You can also check out the full list of winners here.
The Walking Dead is coming to an end with the second part premiere of its eleventh season. The popular zombie series follows a group of survivors struggling to stay afloat in a post-apocalyptic world.
Now, confronted with dealing with their world literally crashing around them, the ravenous undead, and the violent living clash in an epic finale that will push them — and viewers — past the point of no return.
Over 52 episodes, a TV movie, and permanent status in Black people’s minds and hearts, The Proud Family became must-see viewing for those who were excited to see a lighthearted depiction of a Black suburban family on their screens.
Now, the groundbreaking brood is back with The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, a 10-episode revival that is scheduled to air weekly on Disney+ starting Feb. 23. With Penny (voiced by Keke Palmer) and her friends now solidly into their teens, a new audience will join the longtime fans in enjoying this crazy-and-cool family’s return to our viewing habits.
Live at the Experience:
Today, Feb. 25, Grammy and Academy Award-winning multi-hyphenate H.E.R. announced a new leg of her wildly successful BACK OF MY MIND tour. The 19-city live experience will bring the “emotionally searing instrumentalist” (Billboard) across the country beginning Apr. 8 in Honolulu, HI at the Waikiki Shell.
The tour will also make celebrated stops in L.A., Austin, New Orleans, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, and more, with the final stop in Charlotte, NC on June 19. A lead NAACP Image Awards nominee, H.E.R. has every right to be on a high after adding acting to her résumé when she joins the all-star cast of Blitz Bazawule’s The Color Purple and was named Global Ambassador for L’Oréal Paris.
Tickets for the BACK OF MY MIND tour will go on sale, Feb. 25, at 10:00 a.m. ET on TicketMaster.com.
