Heavyweight Champion George Foreman Dead at 76
Heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman died on Friday, March 21, 2025, at 76 years old.
Foreman's family shared the news on Instagram.
“With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr., who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025, surrounded by loved ones," the post said.
Born on January 10, 1949, in Marshall, Texas, Foreman rose from humble beginnings to become one of boxing's most formidable figures. He clinched a gold medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, a victory that catapulted him into the professional boxing arena. In 1973, Foreman secured the world heavyweight title by defeating the then-undefeated Joe Frazier. However, it was his 1974 bout against Muhammad Ali, dubbed the "Rumble in the Jungle," that solidified his place in boxing lore, despite a loss in that match.
After a brief retirement in 1977, Foreman made a remarkable comeback in the late 1980s. In 1994, at the age of 45, he reclaimed the heavyweight title by defeating Michael Moorer, making him the oldest heavyweight champion in history—a record that still stands.
Outside of the ring, Foreman was a preacher at the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Houston, Texas, a church he founded in 1980. Foreman was also a savvy entrepreneur, best known for the George Foreman Grill, which sold over 100 million units worldwide, earning him a place in households across the globe.
