Tory Lanez Denied Bail on Appeal

The California Court of Appeal turned down the rapper’s latest attempt at coming home.

California’s 2nd District Court of Appeal turned down Tory Lanez's plea for release on bond from prison Thursday (Oct 26).

According to court documents obtained by legal affairs journalist Meghann Cuniff, Lanez is still in the process of appealing his conviction for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in 2020.

In her decision, Judge Lee Smalley Edmon emphasized that Lanez, being a Canadian citizen, is a potential flight risk.

“Appellant currently stands convicted of a violent felony, which is a factor a court shall consider in determining whether the defendant poses a danger to the community,” reads Edmon’s ruling. “Based on this record, appellant has not shown that the trial court unjustifiably denied relief or otherwise shown by clear and convincing evidence entitlement to relief.”

In August, Lanez began a 10-year sentence at North Kern State Prison after his request for a new trial was unsuccessful. His initial bail request was denied on Sept. 14.

Lanez’s legal team asserted that the rapper "is not inclined to flee and does not represent a threat to the safety of any individual or the community."

“He merely wishes to support his family and earn a living as is permissible pending the outcome of his appeal,” reads the motion filed Oct. 5.

In December, a jury convicted Lanez – whose real name is Daystar Peterson – of assaulting Megan with a semi-automatic firearm, recklessly discharging the weapon resulting in significant bodily harm, and possessing the unregistered firearm in his vehicle.
