North Carolina Recreation Center Under Fire For Racist Pool Rules Banning Dreadlocks And Weaves

A picture of the Outdoor Recreation Center in Wendell’s pool rules was uploaded to social media and has since caused an uproar.

A North Carolina outdoor recreation center is defending its ban on dreadlocks, hair weaves and extensions after a sign regarding its dress code was uploaded to social media and went viral.

One of the pool rules for the Outdoor Recreation Center In Wendell reads: “no baggy pants, no dread-locks/weaves/extensions or revealing clothes will be permitted or you will be asked to leave.”

After seeing the rule, people lit up the Wendell NC Community Connections Facebook group with comments saying the ban targets African Americans and gives the recreation center license to discriminate based on race. The page has since been taken down.

So what would explain the creation of such a racist policy? Well, the Internet did some sleuthing and found the Facebook page of Teresa Freeman, a user who has the same name as an owner of the business and has posted content shared by the recreation center’s Facebook account. No surprise, her timeline has a problematic past.

Previously, Freeman shared a post from Redneck Country Life, which shows a Confederate flag below the words, “This does not offend me.” It also shows two people wearing sagging jeans, to which Freeman comments “This bull**** does.”

  • While the rec center isn’t responding to media requests for comment, they did issue a statement on Facebook and claim they don’t allow hair extensions because it clogs their drain. As for dreadlocks, they didn’t officially address the criticism.

  • Twitter also erupted in uproar. See what people had to say below.
