Mark O’Mara, who served as George Zimmerman’s attorney in the trial over the death of Trayvon Martin, is now the subject of an ethics complaint stemming from how he handled the case.
The Florida Bar Association confirmed that it is investigating a complaint, but no information has been revealed about who filed the complaints or the nature of the allegations against O’Mara.
In July, Zimmerman was cleared of charges of second-degree murder in the death of the unarmed, 17-year-old Martin in one of the most internationally watched verdicts in recent years.
However, since that time, there has apparently been some distance between O’Mara and Zimmerman, who has had continued legal problems.
In the last few months, after police officers were dispatched to respond to domestic disputes involving Zimmerman, O’Mara announced that he would not represent his one-time client in the event any criminal charges were filed.
After the trial, O’Mara and his fellow attorney on the defense team, Don West, presented Zimmerman with a bill for $2.5 million for legal services, representing about 3,000 hours of work into the case.
At various points in the weeks before the Zimmerman trial, O’Mara and West complained about the tactics of the prosecutors, accusing one, Bernie de la Rionda, of hiding evidence. However, the prosecution lodged similar complaints about O’Mara and West. However, the judge in the case, Debra S. Nelson, took no action on the charges.
