'Wear Something Red Wednesdays' Is a Call to #BringBackOurGirls

Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson is continuing to lead a call to remember nearly 300 Nigerian girls who were abducted by terrorist organization Boko Haram.

It has been more than a year since nearly 300 Nigerian girls were abducted by terrorist organization Boko Haram, a tragic occurrence that led activists and world leaders to call for their rescue through the campaign #BringBackOurGirls.

Though outrage has died down, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and fellow lawmakers have created an initiative called Wear Something Red Wednesdays, calling for the world to remember the girls and to push for the Nigerian government to take out the terrorist organization.

At 2 p.m. on July 8, participants donning red will gather at the U.S. Capitol steps to make their statement in support of the Nigerian girls, some of whom are still missing. Those who cannot make the demonstration can participate via social media by wearing something red and posting a photo using the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls and #JoinRepWilson.
“It is small but extremely effective gesture that will help keep the pressure on the Nigerian government and ours to ensure those girls are not forgotten,” Rep. Wilson said.
The Nigerian Armed Forces reported in April that 200 girls and 93 women were rescued from Boko Haram camps; but they were not the same girls who were kidnapped by the terrorist group in Chibok, Nigeria, in April 2014.
