Ne-Yo Says Monogamy is Not for Him

The R&B singer-songwriter who was previously married is now living his truth.

Don’t expect Ne-Yo to be a one-woman man again.

The “So Sick” singer-songwriter has shared his polyamorous lifestyle, telling TMZ in August that he doesn’t have a “specific cap” on the women that he dates. In a new interview on the podcast Lemon Drop with Karleen Roy, the formerly-married artist revealed more about his decision to be non-monogamous. Ne-Yo was previously married to Bold & Bougie star Crystal Renay from 2016 to 2023.

Around the 25-minute mark of the show, during the ‘Lemon or Lit’ segment, Ne-Yo explained to Roy that he was unfulfilled with being with only one woman. “I realized that I've not been living my truth for a very, very long time. I'm living it now, and you could tell—my skin is glowing,” he said.

He added that he’s in a “great space” but acknowledged that “everything is not for everybody.”

“Society tells you that you're supposed to be with one person. You get married and y’all supposed to be together forever,” Ne-Yo continued. “I am not shitting on marriage. I'm not shitting on anyone who has figured out how to make that thing work for them. Again, everything's not for everybody. Monogamy is for you. It's not for me.”

“I’ve realized this: I know this now, and it’s like a weight lifted off my shoulders,” he confessed. “I realized I’ve spent so much time lying and trying to be somebody I wasn’t for the sake of somebody else… [It’s] complete and utter time wasted when I could have just been exactly who I am, said exactly what I want, exactly how I'm rocking, exactly how I'm not, and then waited for those people to gravitate to me because that's my reality now.”

The singer added that he doesn’t have to “lie anymore.” “And I'll be damned if I ever go back to that person that needed to lie for the appeasement of somebody else. I'm not that no more,” Ne-Yo said.
