Trump Tweeted 'They Will Be Thanking Me' for Firing FBI Director James Comey

The president's latest rant has many calling for immediate impeachment.

The morning after shocking the country by firing the director of the FBI, James Comey, Donald Trump went on a wild Twitter rant defending his decision.

On May 9, the president claimed his decision came at the recommendation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions who said the bureau endured “substantial damage” under Comey. However, many feel this was the president's way to stop the Comey-led investigation into possible collusion between Trump and Russia.

  • In the past, Trump has been supportive of Comey, specifically when it came to his comments regarding the emails of then-candidate Hillary Clinton. However, the president has suggested Comey's firing resulted from the lack of trust members of both parties felt about the director.

After the firing, many Democrats put their past criticisms of Comey aside and condemned the chaotic decision to fire him.

  • Early Wednesday morning, Trump went after democrats on Twitter and mentioned Comey's replacement will bring back the 'prestige of the FBI'

  • Although the firing was met with disapproval, Trump tweeted people will be thanking him one day

Comey's firing does appear to come at a convenient time for the president, who is under investigation for his possible ties to Russia.

While speaking on MSNBC's Morning Joe Sen. Tim Kaine echoed the popular sentiment that Trump fired Comey because he was fearful of what the FBI director's investigation could yield.

"That shows a deeply insecure president who is very very concerned about this investigation and that's the reason Jim Comey got fired. We've got to get to the bottom of this, a special prosecutor is needed," Kaine said of the president thanking Comey for informing him that he wasn't under investigation in his termination letter.

  • Trump's firing of Comey and his subsequent Twitter rant has many calling for his 'immediate impeachment'
