Trayvon Martin’s Mom Releases Her Mother’s Day Video Message

Sybrina Fulton urges parents to call on their governors to re-examine and repeal "Stand Your Ground" laws.

Sunday marks the first Mother’s Day that Sybrina Fulton, mother of slain teen Trayvon Martin, will spend without her son since his senseless death. She is honoring the memory of her son by releasing a video asking parents to send an electronic Mother’s Day card to their governors urging them to “re-examine” "Stand Your Ground" type of laws that are believed to have played a role in ending Trayvon’s life. The video debuted on Friday on hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons’ GlobalGrind.com website.

It’s part of the Second Chance on Shoot First campaign that aims to raise awareness and repeal and prevent the passage of similar legislation, which has been enacted in 26 states and is pending in 10 others. Second Chance was created by a coalition that includes New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the NAACP, the National Urban League, ColorOfChange and other advocacy groups.

“On Sunday, I’m going to say a prayer for other mothers across America who share this unbearable pain. Just like me, 30,000 mothers lost their children this year to senseless gun violence,” a somber Fulton says in the one-minute video. “Nobody can bring our babies back, but it would bring us some comfort if we can spare other mothers the pain that we will feel on this Mother’s Day, and every day for the rest of our lives.”
