Kings Owner Wears ‘THEY NOT LIKE US’ Shirt Courtside For Game Against (Drake’s) Raptors
Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadivé made a bold statement while sitting courtside during his team’s Nov. 6 victory over the Toronto Raptors, wearing a shirt with the words "THEY NOT LIKE US" emblazoned on the front.
The shirt, a clear reference to Kendrick Lamar's diss track “Not Like Us,” appeared to be a jab at Drake, who is frequently seen courtside in Toronto repping his hometown team and whose beef with Lamar captivated the rap world. The Canadian rapper has a deep connection to the Raptors, serving as the team’s Global Ambassador since 2013 and collaborating with them on everything from OVO-branded jerseys to charity initiatives to refurbish local basketball courts.
The timing of Ranadivé’s shirt is notable, as Drake recently stirred controversy by mocking former Raptors star and current Kings power forward DeMar DeRozan during a game. While joining the Raptors' broadcast on Nov. 2, Drake made an eyebrow-raising comment about DeRozan, saying that if the Raptors ever retired DeRozan's jersey, he would "go up there and pull it down" himself.
DeRozan, a Los Angeles native, had publicly aligned himself with Kendrick Lamar in the rap beef, appearing in Lamar's music video for “Not Like Us” as well as joining him on stage during the high-profile Juneteenth "Pop Out" concert in Los Angeles.
The night's convergence of hip hop and basketball culture was further amplified by the presence of rap mogul Master P, who sat just two seats away from Ranadivé. The No Limit Records founder's own NBA dreams briefly materialized with the Raptors in 1999, when he scored eight points during a preseason game before being released. Though his NBA career was short-lived, Master P's presence added another layer to the evening's music and sports crossover.
