Nicki Minaj Clarifies BET Awards Comments

Young Money rapper denies targeting Iggy Azalea in acceptance speech.

That wasn't shade Nicki Minaj was throwing at Iggy Azalea at the BET Awards on Sunday (June 29), the Young Money rapper has clarified.

Upon accepting her Best Female Hip Hop Artist trophy over the weekend, Minaj made a quip about writing her own records that seemed to be directed at Azalea, but after letting the rumor marinate for a few days, she officially broke her silence on Twitter this morning.

"The media puts words in my mouth all the time and this is no different," Minaj accused. "I will always take a stance on women writing b/c I believe in us! I believe we're smart enough to write down our own thoughts and perspective, just like the men do. I've been saying this for 5 YEARS."

She went on to name Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliott as examples of female rappers/writers that she admires, and spoke about Azalea. "I've congratulated Iggy on the success of 'Fancy' publicly," pointed out the 31-year-old "Pill N Potions" spitter. "She should be very proud of that. All the women nominated should b proud."

Minaj rounded out the series of tweets by proclaiming her unchanging "desire to motivate women to write."

Azalea responded to the fervor as well, writing on Instagram that the "general explosion of pettiness" surrounding the Minaj story "is hard to ignore" and "lame." She added, "Generally speaking I'm unbothered by anything that 'happened' at the BET awards and just feel worn out by everyone trying to make me have wars with people all the time."

The 24-year-old Aussie rapstress never made mention of Minaj but said that she only has time for those who wish her well. She also encouraged "everyone" to stop "exhausting themselves" over something she's "still not 100% sure even exists."
