T.I., Roxanne Shanté Discuss Tonight’s Hip-Hop 50 Live Concert In Yankee Stadium
On Friday (August 11), Hip-Hop officially turns 50 years old. And to celebrate, the culture is having a huge blowout concert at Yankee Stadium in The Bronx – the borough where it all started.
The show is slated to feature some of hip-hop’s greatest to ever do it, including Snoop Dogg, Run-D.M.C. and Lil Wayne, guaranteeing it’ll be an amazing event. Two other greats from two separate eras, T.I. and Roxanne Shanté, are also scheduled to take the stage and shared with BET what they’re expecting for it.
“It’s a pivotal moment and defintiely one for the books,” T.I. says. “I know hip-hop wasn’t expected to make it five years, let alone 50. So to go from a fan of the culture or a fan of something that you are fortunate and blessed enough to become a part of… and not only that, but to have your contributions be recognized, I can't find a word for it.”

For Shanté, who has been a part of hip-hop professionally since the mid-80s, performing nowadays isn’t much different from back in the day, but the venue they will be taking on Friday evening will prove to be a change.
“For me, the performance isn't it really isn't different because not only do I do me, it depends on where you catch me,” she explains. “So if you were in Queensbridge over the weekend, and you were there on Sunday, then you get to see Roxanne Shanté, the full host, six hours of just a vaccine shot at making you laugh, taking you down memory lane, and join in the music dancing with you, cracking jokes. That's what I love to do. That's what has made me such a sought-after host because of my ability to connect with the crowd.”
In addition to the concert at Yankee Stadium, there are other events throughout the weekend that hip-hop fans can enjoy. See the full list below, as well as the Hip-Hop 50 Live lineup.
