Cicely Tyson, Billy Porter Win Tony Awards

Kinky Boots is big winner on Broadway's biggest night.

Broadway's biggest night was packed with stars, memorable moments and, of course, many winners. Cicely Tyson, Billy Porter and Courtney B. Vance were among those who won Tony Awards on Sunday night.
After a 30 year reprieve from the stage, Cicely Tyson came back in full-form in A Trip to Bountiful and earned a win for Best Actress in a Leading Role. The 88-year-old, who noted that she's the sole-surviving member of her family, caused tears during her acceptance speech. "I cannot help but remember all the thumbprints that have touched this being all through her career," she said.
Patina Miller also won Best Leading Actress in a Musical for her work in Pippin. She was previously nominated in 2011 for Sister Act. This marks the first time in history two Black actresses have won in lead categories.

While Tom Hanks failed to win a Tony for Lucky Guy, his co-star Courtney B. Vance did. It was Vance's first win after three nominations.
British musical Kinky Boots, featuring music by Cyndi Lauper, was the night's big winner, nabbing six Tony Awards including a Best Leading Actor win for Billy Porter. Meanwhile, audience favorite Motown the Musical was shut out from the wins.
Still, nominees Valisia LeKae and Charl Brown, who play Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson, respectively, brought down the house with a performance of "Get Ready," "Dancing in the Streets" and a Jackson 5 medley.
Other noteworthy moments in the telecast included a show-closing performance of "Empire State of Mind" by last year's winner for Porgy & Bess Audra McDonald and Neil Patrick Harris
But the most talked-about moment of the show will likely be Mike Tyson's cameo during Harris's show opener. Tyson, who earned critical acclaim for his one-man show Undisputed, joined Harris in a musical number.
