Why Ice Cube Was Sued By Mister Rogers Over ‘A Gangsta’s Fairytale’

The West Coast rap icon shared the tale while celebrating the 30th anniversary of Amerikkka’s Most Wanted.

Ice Cube has been celebrating the 30th anniversary of his acclaimed solo album, Amerikkka’s Most Wanted.

  • This past weekend on Sunday (May 17), the West Coast rap icon hosted an hour-long listening party over Instagram Live for his 16.3 million followers and fans as he shared some of his favorite memories, anecdotes and “tales from the darkside” behind the album’s formation, track-by-track.

Amerikkka’s Most Wanted, which spent 16 weeks atop Billboard’s chart, was the first solo album Ice Cube released following his departure from N.W.A.

  • When “A Gangsta’s Fairytale” came up on his queue, Cube revealed that children’s TV personality Mister Rogers sued him over the usage of the theme song from his show at the beginning of the track.

“I actually wrote this for Eazy-E, but y’all know what it is. “We weren't getting down at the time, so I had to take it myself,” Cube shared.

“It’s a trip. Because of this song, Mister Rogers sued us,” Cube continued. “He was mad cause we had the ‘Mister Rogers’ theme at the beginning of this s**t, ‘It’s a wonderful day in the neighborhood’ and all that. [He] sued us and was getting five cents a record ‘til we took that part off.”
