Spike Lee Turns 65
Legendary filmmaker Spike Lee is celebrating another milestone. The Oscar-winning writer, director, and producer turned 65 today.
Though he's the unofficial mayor of "Da People's Republic of Brooklyn" and reps the borough to the fullest, Lee was born on March 20, 1957 in Atlanta, Georgia. After relocating to New York with his family when he was young, Lee went on to attend John Dewey High School in Brooklyn, before returning to the South to go to Morehouse College. After getting his bachelor's degree in mass communications, he attended New York University to study film and TV. There, he'd make his first film, Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads, before going on to direct his critically acclaimed feature debut, She's Gotta Have It.
Since bursting onto the scene in 1986, Lee has gone on to become one of the most celebrated directors in the world, so it's only fitting that fans celebrated his 65th birthday on social media.
At 65, there's no indication that Lee is slowing down. He's reportedly working on a musical as well as Prince of Cats, a hip hop adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.
