There's no doubt the Republican National Committee meant well in its effort to celebrate the bravery civil rights icon Rosa Parks demonstrated when she refused to move to the back of a segregated bus in 1955. Instead it ended up being mocked.

In a tweet posted on Sunday to commemorate the anniversary of the historic event, @GOP tweeted, "Today we remember Rosa Parks' bold stand and her role in ending racism."

Problem is, racism in the United States by a significant number of people's reckoning is far from over. The tweet unleashed a firestorm of others using the hashtag #RacismEndedWhen that criticized and mocked the RNC for being out of touch.

They cited current civil rights issues, such as voting rights, with tweets like the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's "#RacismEndedWhen Republicans stopped Congress from fixing the Voting Rights Act... cause who needs that anymore?"

Other tweets highlighted recent racist attacks, including "#RacismEndedWhen confederates flew confederate flags at the white house containing a black family."

Some took a more lighthearted approach, such as @only4RM's "#RacismEndedWhen Fitz built Liv that Dream House in VT on those 30 acres. 10 acres short but we'll let it slide. For now."

Three hours after it sent the original tweet the RNC acknowledged its error.

"Previous tweet should have read "Today we remember Rosa Parks' bold stand and her role in fighting to end racism," it wrote.
