Accused Philadelphia Mass Shooter May Have Begun Killing Spree Earlier Than First Believed

Kimbrady Carriker allegedly killed Joseph Wamah, Jr. approximately 44 hours before the mass shooting took place.

Law enforcement officials who are investigating a Philadelphia mass shooting that took place in Philadelphia on July 3 believe that the suspect shot and killed one of the victims almost two days before the body was discovered,  the Associated Press reports.

On Sunday, (July 9) Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said in a statement that an “error prevented police from discovering Joseph Wamah Jr.’s  body right away.”

‘“It has been determined through information received through a source and corroborated by the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office and additional evidence; that homicide victim Joseph Wamah, Jr. was killed by suspect Kimbrady Carriker approximately 44 hours before the mass shooting,” Krasner said.

According to the report, Philadelphia police responded to a 911 call about gunshots at South 56th Street, roughly 90 minutes after they now believe Wamah was killed around 2 a.m. July 2 (Sunday). During their search,  the authorities were accidentally dispatched to the wrong location, North 56th Street, causing them not to find Wamah’s body initially.

“The grieving family of the deceased has been briefed on this new information, and I cannot express enough the sorrow I feel,” Krasner added.

On Wednesday (July 5), Kimbrady Carriker, 40, was charged with five counts of murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, and weapons counts of possession without a license and carrying firearms in public.

Accused Philly Mass Shooter Said He Was Trying To ‘Help’ Police Fight Gun Violence

Along with Wamah, Lashyd Merrit, Dymir Stanton, Ralph Moralis, and Daujan Brown, were all killed in the shooting. A 2-year-old and a 13-year-old were also wounded during the shooting.

After Carriker was apprehended, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney shared his outrage about how the suspect could have had access to firearms and other paraphernalia.

"Where does a person like this get a semiautomatic handgun? Where does a person like this buy a Kevlar vest? This country needs to reexamine its conscience when it comes to Congress or the state legislature and try to figure out how we get these guns out of these people's hands," Kenny told CBS Philadelphia.

Carriker has been denied bail and will remain in custody until his preliminary hearing which is scheduled for July 24.
