Golf prodigy Eldrick "Tiger" Woods won his first major tournament, the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club, on April 13, 1997, in Georgia.

The lowest score in the tournament's history, the star athlete's 72-hole broke a record of 271 shared by golf veterans Jack Nicklaus and Raymond Floyd. As the son of an African-American father and a Thai mother, Woods made history at 21 by becoming the youngest and first person of color to achieve the high honor, seven years prior to the club admitting its first Black member. 

The golfer would continue on to win the Masters again in 2001, 2002 and 2005. Woods' illustrious career gained him global recognition as one of the greatest golfers in the history of the sport. By 2006, he was the highest paid athlete across all professional sports. 

A mix of physical and personal problems that surfaced at the end of the decade led to Woods' first winless season in 2010.
