President Obama Nominates First Woman to Head Major Military Command
There could soon be one more huge crack in the glass ceiling.
According to U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter, President Barack Obama will be nominating Air Force General Lori Robinson to be the next United States combatant commander. Robinson will be the first woman to fill the position.
It was not until this year that the department opened up all combat jobs to women, making the position available to Robinson. If confirmed, Robinson would head the U.S. Northern Command, which was created as a result of the 9/11 attacks. She is currently head of the Pacific Air Force. She will be replacing Adm. William Gortney, who is set to retire.
Just because 2016 is Obama's last year in office does not mean that the president plans on going quietly into the night. He recently nominated his choice for the new Supreme Court Justice, and is getting more and more involved in the current presidential election.
