Fashion Killa!: Afro-Latina Model Yovanna Ventura Launches Collection With Revolve
You might not know who she is, but you’ve definitely seen Yovanna Ventura. She’s modeled for every brand spanning the gamut from the Kardashian clan specifically, starring in campaigns for Yeezy and Good American. She had a small role in BET’s The New Edition Story.
The Dominican beauty has upwards of 5 million Instagram followers and has been on the receiving end of Cupid’s bow from everyone from The Weeknd to Justin Bieber. But to reduce a girl to who she’s dated and what her social media stats are is silly. Yovanna is quite extraordinary, and that’s exactly what I found out the first time I met her. Though we have to give her context, when I meet Yovanna we’re in Bermuda on a trip courtesy of online retailer, Revolve.com, who Yovanna is teaming up with as her first foray into fashion design. Since we landed on the plane, Yovanna has been in front of the camera non-stop, changing outfits more times than I care to count and never ever breaking a sweat. “You’re the hardest working girl on this trip”, I say to her as we set up to chat on the floor of her 5-star hotel suite that she is sharing with two members of her team. Clothes are spilling out of suitcases in a way that I can only describe as organized chaos and when I knock on the door, all three girls are disappointed to discover that I am not the room service they ordered. “Thank you”, Yovanna says with a laugh, indicating that noticing her work ethic is indeed a compliment. Though she is only 23, she seems to have a disproportionate amount of energy for work, “I don't have time to chill but I enjoy it.”, she says “I enjoy working a lot. When I'm sitting down relaxing I'm just like ‘ok, I could be doing so much more. I might as well do some work.’” Well that’s one way to think about it. Another piece is cultural. Ventura’s Dominican mother and father instilled in her a very solid ambitious drive. “I'm the only child and my mom never spoiled me which I am very grateful for, she always made me work hard for anything I wanted.”, she confesses.
Looks like it’s all paying off though because for the first time ever, Ventura is designing clothing. “I've always really been into fashion. My best friend was a stylist. I do everything, you will see me super sporty one day or super classy or super dressed up. I love trying everything, I don't have one style. I'm like everything.” And so will her collection be everything? Like Ventura, it’s actually laser focused. In conjunction with Revolve’s in house brand, h:ours Ventura’s 21 piece collection will launch at the end of August. “I've been working with Revolve for about 2 years”, she says “Raisa [chief marketer at Revolve] had basically called me and said I was the muse and that they wanted to make a collaboration with me and we shot everything in Paris.” Ah, more work. More shooting. Even though it never happens, I wonder what she does when she’s not doing that. “I chill with my friends and my dog. We go to the beach. Honestly, I don't really chill because when I have days off, I'm hitting up my manager like, ‘Ok, what's going on.’” Seems like a sickness but really, that’s what it takes to make it in this business, a relentless commitment to excelling expectations. And for girls, for models in particular, this kind of career isn’t always forever. “When I accomplish one thing, I feel like there is a lot more that I have to do that I can do. Like I'm nowhere near my points. My dream, my goal is like when I'm on the level I want to be and I have enough money, I want to open up my own shelter or my own little farm with animals.” Until then, it looks like modeling and perhaps fashion design is it. That is, until Ventura reminds me that she wants to get into acting. “I want to model for way bigger brands. I want to open my own business. I want to have a variation of businesses. I want to be a business woman. I want to be at a level where I can start opening up those things. I want to get into acting, so I don't have time right now with all the modeling work.”
Acting, while definitely aspirational, is made much more difficult by Ventura’s innate shyness. “I've actually done a BET show, I was in New Edition. I was way too shy back then, they wanted to give me a speaking part but I was way too shy and too nervous and I didn't even want to dance.” Yes, this girl who is so stunningly gorgeous, it almost hurts to look at her is also painfully shy. You can tell she’s introverted by the limited interactions she has with people outside of her own team. Some might mistake that for snobbiness, but it’s hard to read someone as snobby when they are sitting bare-faced and cross legged with you on a floor. “A lot of people let things get to their head. What I know is that social media doesn't make you anything. Social media helps you open businesses and make money but it doesn't make you better than anybody. I have 5 million followers I don't feel like I’m nowhere near a celebrity or anything like that. I feel like you have to stay humble. That's so minor.” What’s not minor is her presence though, and her drive, which in this day and age is a deadly combination.
