In the lead-up to Friday’s finals, where they secured a spot with a throw of 18.62m—placing fourth in their qualification group and seventh overall in the shot put semifinals—Saunders turned heads with their stylish black face mask and vibrant visor sunglasses.
Saunders later shared that her bold outfit was meant to inspire others to embrace their individuality. The athlete told reporters that they were overjoyed at the attention the sport has gathered.
“It is one way to make me stand out and I want to encourage other women – a lot of younger athletes are coming through and they really push their own styles. It limits the showcase that we are shot putters, but we have our own style, we can do things as big and bright as any sprinter, any jumper, whoever. So we deserve that spotlight as well,” they added.
Saunders isn’t new to making a statement with their gear. Their striking fashion choices have become a hallmark of their dynamic presence in recent years.
This athlete, who earned a silver medal at the Tokyo Games three years ago, continues to shine both on and off the field.
