Kendrick Lamar to Debut Short Film Inspired By good kid m.A.A.d city
Kendrick Lamar's has translated the inspiration from his Grammy-nominated album to visual form in a 14-minute short film, m.A.A.d, which is set to debut at the Sundance NEXT Fest next Saturday (Aug. 9). The festival held, at the Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles, celebrates "the intersection of music and film."
Lamar links with Sundance Award-winning director Kahlil Jackson for m.A.A.d. The film depicts a "kaleidoscope of story lines and ideas that defy typical categorization to explore new languages and news forms."
The "Swimming Pools" rapper is currently hard at work on a follow up to good kid m.A.A.d city. He's recorded as many as 40 cuts for the album. "If I keep focusing on, 'I need to make something better than good kid,' it's going to be just that," he says in the new issue of Complex magazine. "That's not challenging yourself. I don't want to become that person reflecting on what has been done. What I'm doing now is the question. I'm only as good as my last word, my last hook, my last bridge."
Lamar's short film is an expansion of the storytelling elements already seen in his music videos, and re-teams with him Jackson, who was his Yeezus tour director.
The m.A.A.d screening, will be followed by a panel discussion with Jackson, a viewing of the film Imperial Dreams, and a performance from "2 On" singer Tinashe.
