Box Office: Did You See Chi-Raq ?
The odds really seem to be forever in The Hunger Games’ favor, as Mockingjay – Part 2 won the box office for the third weekend in a row. The Jennifer Lawrence film topped the post-Thanksgiving box office with $18.6 million, bringing its domestic total to $227.1 million and its global total to $523.9 million.
Christmas-themed horror comedy Krampus took second place, pulling in a solid $16 million. Starring Adam Scott and Toni Collette, the film far exceeded expectations during the typically slow weekend.
Creed stayed in the ring for a decent second weekend, edging past The Good Dinosaur to take third place. After breaking records to become the biggest Rocky debut of all time, Ryan Coogler's film pulled in $15.54 million in its second weekend for a domestic total of $65.1 million.
The Good Dinosaur, on the other hand, became the first Pixar film to never see first place at the box office, dropping 60 percent to earn $15.51 million and fourth place. James Bond rounded out the top five, as Spectre grossed $5.4 million for a domestic total of $184.5 million.
But the real story at the box office is the success of Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq, which only opened in 305 locations but still earned $1.3 million. Surprisingly, despite all the backlash, Chicago residents turned out in droves to the see the satirical film, which takes on gun violence in a very unique and controversial way. Amazon Studios, who produced the film, haven't yet announced when it will be available for streaming, but hopefully they'll put it out while the controversy is hot.
