Pharrell Williams Talks Music, Fiancée and Fatherhood
In a somewhat rare interview, Pharrell Williams sat down with NBC's TODAY show Thursday (Aug. 29) and shared about his music, relationship, fatherhood and more, and it turns out, it's the simple things that drives Skateboard P.
Oddly enough, Williams owes much of his success to showering, he revealed. "I can write pretty much anywhere, but in the shower it's, like, where it's, like, really great," he said of writing hits like Nelly's "Hot in Herre."
He also shared that before stardom, band camp was the Virginia Beach native's musical forum and the place where he met N.E.R.D. partner Chad Hugo. "Most of us were kinda nerdy," he said. "Nobody sort of walked in, like, you know, Kurt-Cobain-Dave-Grohl-cool."
By 19, the duo nabbed their first hit (Wreckx-N-Effect's "Rump Shaker"), and have worked with just about every music superstar over the last 20 years. But with so many "odd" yet "awesome" hits to his credit, what's his best collaboration? "My son," he said of his little boy, Rocket, with fiancée Helen Lasichanh. The "besties" are very much in love, he said. "Every night is like a sleepover."
In the future, Williams hopes to keep making great music and remains humbled by his growing list of accolades. That doesn't mean he craves the spotlight, though. "I'm just thankful to be the punctuation in the sentence," he explained. "I don't have to be the subject or the predicate, just a part of it."
