Box Office: Amazing Spider-Man 2 Soars With $92 Million
Spidey owns the weekend. The summer's first blockbuster, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, opened to a whopping $92 million at the box office, easily taking first place this weekend.
The sequel, which stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx, couldn't quite best Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which debuted with $95 million in its first weekend.
Holding strong in second place was the female-centric comedy The Other Woman, starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton, which earned an additional $14.2 million. The film, which opened in first place last week, features a guest appearance by Nicki Minaj, in her feature film debut.
In third place was faith-based film Heaven Is for Real, which grossed $8.7 million in its third weekend for a total $65.6 million. Rounding out the top five were Captain America and Rio 2, which brought it $7.8 million and $7.6 million, respectively.
Belle topped the specialty box office, grossing $105,000 in a limited release of just four theaters in New York and Los Angeles. The period drama, starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw as the illegitimate, mixed-race daughter of an aristocrat, will open on more screens and cities in the coming weeks.
Next week, Seth Rogen and Zac Efron's Neighbors goes up against Jon Favreau's Chef and the feel-good film Mom's Night Out.
