Consequence Unearths Kanye West's Original Handwritten College Dropout Tracklist
Kanye West’s music may’ve changed over time but the way he’s prepped the release of it hasn’t.
‘Ye himself Tweeted a handwritten tracklist for SWISH on Sunday (January 24), which prompted former collaborator Consequence to dig into his archives and find a similar artifact from a much earlier album.
Cons Instagrammed a picture of the original tracklisting for Yeezy’s first LP College Dropout with some of the songs listed not actually making the final cut, but were subsequently released either officially or through the underground. The Chicago producer told BET a little more about the tracklisting.
“‘Keep The Receipt’ featured the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard,” he wrote. “One of my personal early favorite ‘Ye records was ‘My Way.’ Do yourself a favor and find that on the Internet.” He also captioned in the Instagram post a little more backstory about the tracklist. “Some things never change... The ritual continues... This is the First First handwritten Tracklisting of ‘The College Dropout’ by Kanye from around I think 03' ‘18 Years’ would later go on to become ‘Gold Digger’ and ‘Good, Bad, Ugly’ was swapped for ‘Spaceship’ and later used on #DontQuitYourDayJob.”
College Dropout was released on February 10, 2004, which is interesting considering Consequence’s priceless artifact was circa 2003. “Gold Digger”, which he notes was originally called “18 Years”, was on Late Registration rather than College Dropout. "Good, Bad, Ugly," was also apparently swapped for "Spaceship" and appeared on Cons’ 2007 LP Don’t Quit Your Day Job.
