Twitch Streamer Kai Cenat Charged After NYC Giveaway Causes Riot At Union Square Park
Social media star Kai Cenat was charged Friday with "inciting a riot" after he hosted a "giveaway" at Union Square Park. Thousands of people showed up, causing chaos that resulted in 65 arrests, about half of which were juveniles.
According to NBC News, New York City Police Chief Jeffrey Maddrey told reporters that the event was neither permitted nor sanctioned by the city.
Cenat, 21, had to be removed from the area by police for his own safety.
“Officers were attacked, we were crushed,” Maddrey said on Friday, adding that he was hit with “multiple objects.” Three officers were reportedly injured and a sergeant suffered a broken hand.
“I personally observed young people having panic attacks, anxiety attacks,” Maddrey said. “People were suffering out here.”
Cenat is one of the most popular stars on Twitch. In March, he broke the record for most active subscribers on the platform after hosting a 30-day uninterrupted livestream called a “subathon.”
Cenat is known for his pranks, gameplay and comedic reactions. His actions have gotten him temporarily banned from Twitch five times.
Friday's event was supposed to start at 4 p.m., but NYPD says that by 3 p.m. the park was full of mostly young people clamoring to see the social media star.
One 16-year-old who identified himself as Rodrigo to NBC News said that he came hoping to win money or a game console. “And then a big storm of people started running and there were cops everywhere," Rodrigo said.
Several teens told reporters that they didn't "fear for their life" during the event, adding that they came "for the vibes" and describing Cenat as "the best person in the world."
