Preparing for Your Next Career Fair
Stand Out for All the Good Reasons
Recruiters are usually excited to meet potential new employees looking to work at their company. Job fairs are becoming commonplace and there are several candidates vying for a limited number of positions. Although most career fairs are crowded events, especially in today’s job market, there are usually a handful of potential recruits who will stand out from the others for many good reasons.
When preparing for your next event, get a leg up on the others by following these simple steps.
Research the List
Research ahead of time and find out which companies will be participating and learn as much as possible, in the limited time, about them, the products they produce and where the corporate offices are located. Use company websites to view the list of current positions available and check online for the latest industry events.
Recruiters will notice that you are prepared.
Pitch Yourself to the Masses
Career fairs leave very little time to make the best impression, so make the best use of the time you have when speaking to recruiters. Develop your personal pitch — you are your best spokesperson. Be able to speak clearly, quickly and concisely about your background and why you are a top candidate for the position. Tailor your pitch to suit each position which you have an interest. Talk about your experience, your qualifications, your education and the results you’ve achieved throughout your career.
Practice, Practice, Practice
Practice your pros. Before you go, practice your pitch. Record yourself speaking about yourself. Be aware of your body language and other non-verbal signals you may unknowingly be sending to potential recruiters. Practice to put your best self forward.
Your Printed Package
Take several copies of your resume and other material that you can leave behind.
Stay aware of upcoming events in your area by signing up for job notices and utilizing online resources such as OppsPlace.com for new openings at some of the top companies across the country.
