Amber Guyger, the white Dallas officer who shot and killed her neighbor Botham Jean, was fired from the Dallas Police Department on Monday.

According to a news release from the department, Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall terminated Guyger after an internal investigation found she had engaged in “adverse conduct” when she was arrested and charged with manslaughter.

Although the police department originally said the firing decision would not occur until after the criminal investigation, Guyger was relieved of her position before the investigation concluded, reported The Dallas Morning News. 

It remains unclear exactly what “adverse conduct” Chief Hall is referring to in the police statement.

Jean was shot dead in his South Side Flats apartment, which Guyger said she mistook for her own. According to the former officer’s account, she returned home from a 15-hour shift when she parked on the fourth floor, instead of the third, where she lived, according to the affidavit.

Guyger said the door to the apartment was unlocked and slightly ajar. according to the affidavit, yet neighbors in the same complex recorded videos showing the doors do not stay ajar when opened.

Guyger has a right to appeal her firing from the department.
