Autopsy: Jayland Walker Was Grazed Or Shot By A Bullet 46 Times In Akron Police Shooting

The “summary of findings” was released by a Summit County, Ohio Medical Examiner on Friday.

Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old Black man killed by Akron police on June 27, was grazed or shot by a bullet 46 times, according to a “summary of findings” issued on Friday (July 15).

According to an autopsy released by Summit County Medical Examiner Lisa Kohler, there were 46 gunshot entrance wounds or graze injuries, which are on the surface of the skin. During a morning news conference on Friday, Kohler said the count of wounds is different from the number of shots fired.

“We are not able to say which bullet killed him. He had several devastating injuries that could cause death," Kohler said, according to USA Today.

Kohler notes that five bullets entered Walker’s body from the back, but that doesn’t mean he was running away and that he could have twisted. Walker was handcuffed when his body was received at the medical examiner’s office.

Additionally, a toxicology report came back negative for any evidence of drugs or alcohol in Walker’s system. 26 bullets were recovered from his body with Kohler saying that Walker’s death was due to blood loss. His manner of death was homicide, or shot by others, she added.

Walker was fatally shot by Akron police on June 27 after a car chase. Officers reportedly shot 90 times at him, striking him 60, according to the initial report.

The shooting has since fueled widespread protests in Akron, prompting Mayor Daniel Horrigan to issue a curfew for the downtown area off-and-on over the past few weeks.
